Desk top analysis of paper formation

A method for rapidly acquiring images of paper formation using conventional desktop tools is described Paper samples formed on the University of Melbourne laboratory sheet former from two different pulp stocks (bleached eucalypt kraft and bleached pine kraft) at various forming conditions and having different mass variations were scanned using a desktop scanner fitted with a transparency adaptor (HP 6100 T/C) operated in transparency mode with a red filter interposed between the light source and sheet. The standard deviation of the image histogram, the scattering power of the sheet, and basis weight was correlated with the standard deviation of mass variation derived from beta-ray absorption for each pulp. The scanner technique was found to be suitable for achieving high resolution images of basis weight variation.
