Worldwide Product Standards v. Company Product Standards

There are distinct advantages to designing seal grooves and housings to international standards. By doing this, manufacturers of hydraulic systems can utilize standard products, thereby avoiding the cost of special tooling. This allows customers easy access to standard spare parts. Additionally, seals can be readily upgraded if the operating conditions of a machine change. Two of these standards are ISO 7425-1 for housings of elastomer-energized plastic seals and ISO 10766 for housings of rectangular bearings on hydraulic cylinder pistons. This paper describes how a seal and bearing manufacturer has developed a modular ISO system, a range of products that meets dimensional requirements while providing different sealing properties.
