In 2006, an ISO working group completed development work on several standards to assess the reliability of pneumatic components by testing. This is a four part series of standards with detailed procedures and definitions of failure criteria. A description of these parts is included in this paper. A series of interlaboratory tests was begun on cylinders and valves in Feb. 2006 to determine if test results would be repeatable and reproducible among the different laboratories when following the standards. Eight laboratories tested cylinders and eight laboratories tested valves. Four of these labs tested both products, so there were 12 laboratories total from France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Sweden, and the USA - a truly international effort. In addition, four companies each provided 36 products for the program, and it required 1 1/2 years to complete the testing. The ISO working group reviewed the results of this program at a meeting in Paris on July 2, 2007. These results, the reasons for variations, and the recommendations for changes in the ISO standards are also described in this paper.
