This paper gives the historical background for seamless and welded tubes and an overview about the cylinder market situation in North America and Europe. Before looking at future light-weight construction trends in this specific business area, an outline of the steel grades currently used in North America and Europe will be given. Additionally, different safety concepts are investigated. The main part of the paper deals with the newly developed modified steel grades with optimized burst behavior at low temperatures. After describing different material behavior at different temperatures, the target is to define a minimum Charpy impact energy level in transverse direction that will avoid multiple material failure of the hydraulic cylinder tube at low temperatures.
