Fluid power systems are widely used in agricultural and construction equipment for power conversion, power transmission, and motion control. It is very challenging to design such systems with satisfactory controllability and efficiency targets, since machine’s functions and operations are so different and so complicated. In past twenty years, a new technology, Electro-Hydraulic (EH) Control has been developed and implemented in the industry. Recently an EH system with Pressure Compensated Independent Metering Valve (PC-IMV) has been developed in Caterpillar. In this paper, the basic configuration and principles of a PC-IMV system will be discussed and its application on construction equipment with controllability and efficiency improvement will be presented.
