USING ELECTRONICS SAFELY

Using Electronics Safely requires much more than just making connections and protecting the housing from the environment. The hardware design of the electronic control unit must meet stringent temperature, voltage, vibration and shock loading requirements as well as consideration into how the inputs and outputs are handled in regards to safety. Temperature extremes and operation ranges from -40 to +185°F are used as benchmarks in the Mobile Industry. Sealing of the unit to a minimum of IP65 with some devices as high as IP69 are also used as standards today. EMI/RFI surrounding the vehicle electronics requires compliance of the unit up to as much as 100 V/m. Taking these requirements as well as system safety requirements from standards from IEC 61508 is the focus of this document and should be considered for the Mobile Machinery Market as the use of electronics increases moving into the future.
