Characteristics of Air Flow Control Components for the Emergency Breathing System

In this study, air flow control components for the emergency breathing system are discussed. The emergency breathing system consists of a punching needle, a needle valve, a pressure-compensated flow control valve and a relief valve with a poppet. The emergency breathing system (EBS) is used when the problems such as an explosion and a fire happen. A maximum pressure and a nominal flow-rate of a reservoir are 200 bar and 2 lpm, respectably. Controlling the constant air flow without source pressure variation is a very important technique and finding the governing parameters for constant air flow control is also one of the optimal design procedures. Pneumatic circuit for the purpose of a new mechanism development for EBS is suggested, and each of components is analyzed using simulink of Matlab. The relations between parameters are derived and the dimension calculating of components are conducted. The experimental setup is designed and assembled, and the constant flow control performances of manufactured EBS are evaluated through the experiment. It is confirmed that the suggested pneumatic circuit and manufactured EBS are useful to use under the bad environmental conditions such as explosion or fire happening.
