LESSONS LEARNED FROM A SOURCE MELT IN FLORIDA

At 11:15 p.m. on Friday the 13th of July, 2001, the radiation safety officer (RSO) for AmeriSteel Corporation's Baldwin steel mill notified the Florida Bureau of Radiation Control (FL BRC) that a radioactive source had been inadvertently melted at the company's mill, located due west of Jacksonville. The call initiated a major response effort by the state, involving FL BRC personnel based in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tallahassee. The lessons learned from Florida's experience might prove to be useful for state radiation control programs responding to similar incidents in their jurisdictions.
