EFFECT OF NONYLPHENYL ETHOXYLATES(NPES), HORMONE DISRUPTERS ON THE BARRIER FUNCTION OF EPITHELIAL MEMBRANE

NPEs, hormone disrupters that have spermicidal effects are known to be the substrates of P-gp. Although NPEs inhibit the efflux of daunomycin, a P-gp substrate. NPEs did not induce P-gp expression on Caco-2 cells. NPEs appear to lower the barrier function of cell membranes by competitively inhibiting the P-gp mediated efflux for hydrophobic drugs and opening the tight junction between the cells for hydrophilic drugs.
