This paper discusses a major construction project at St. Louis-Lambert International Airport where a new parallel runway with two taxiways was constructed as part of the airport expansion. The paper focuses on the geotechnical aspects of the project, which included time issues (construction expedients), use of chemical additives, slope stability, settlement, and subgrade stabilization. One of the unique challenges of the project was that cuts and fills of up to 30 meters were made as part of the grading for the runway platform and involved moving approximately 12 million cubic meters of soil. In addition, the cut was almost entirely below the groundwater table. The project also involved construction of the first highway tunnel in the state of Missouri.
