This paper describes radically new EMI filtered connectors, which utilize an internally grounded feedthrough capacitor. Figure 1, on the following page, shows filtered connectors that are typically used in the military, aerospace, medical, telecommunication and other industries. At CARTS in March 2001', the authors presented a paper entitled, "Radically New Internally Grounded Feedthrough Capacitor." This paper described new feedthrough capacitors designed with an internally grounded electrode plate, which eliminates the necessity for an outside diameter (OD) or perimeter termination. These capacitors are now used in human implant applications (such as implantable defibrillators) in combination with a hermetic feedthrough terminal and are described in U.S. patent 5,905,627 entitled INTERNALLY GROUNDED FEEDTHROUGH FILTER CAPACITOR~2. The capacitor ground electrode plate is internally attached to one or more lead wires, which can pass all the way through the device or to one or more grounded studs. Internally grounded feedthrough capacitors have been used over the past few years in a variety of implantable medical hermetic terminals such as those used in cardiac pacemakers, implantable defibrillators and the like. A unique feature of the internal ground is the elimination of the OD termination and also the elimination of the need for an electrical/mechanical connection between the shielded case or housing and the capacitor OD (or perimeter in the case of rectangular feedthrough).
