We proposed and investigated the characteristics of a novel and practical admission-control algorithm, for connection provisioning in WDM mesh networks. We showed that, by using our algorithm, most of the connections' SLAs can be guaranteed. Our algorithm allows the network operator to choose a proper route for a specific customer request according to its SLA and current network state. Different from most previous works on WDM mesh protection which assume the single-failure scenario (e.g., occurrence of only a single fiber cut which is repaired before another cut occurs), the more realistic scenario of multiple, near-simultaneous failures can be easily handled by our algorithm. Most importantly, the proposed algorithm is based on the link-state protocol; hence, it can be easily scaled and implemented in the emerging GMPLS control plane. We evaluated the performance of the SLA-guaranteed connection-provisioning algorithm when no protection or dedicated-path protection is considered. The study of how to incorporate other protection schemes, such as shared-path protection and link protection will be our future research topic.
