In moderate climates short time fluctuations in solar irradiance and their impact on the grid voltage will become an important issue with regard to future large scale application of residential photovoltaic systems connected to the low voltage grid. Several important studies from the past that were related to the subject are recalled. A simple model is set up in order to simulate the entire energy conversion chain, starting from time series patterns of clearness index down to the stochastic behaviour of the grid voltage at characteristic load conditions. The approach that is presented leads to distributions of cumulative probability for the time behaviour of the distribution grid. By means of wavelet-based multi-scale analysis it is furthermore possible to distinguish fluctuations and their probability of occurrence according to the fluctuations' particular time scales.
