EFFICACY OF TILMICOSIN IN AN INDUCED HAEMOPHILUS PARASUIS INFECTION IN SWINE

Once associated with sporadic disease in young pigs, Haemophilus parasuis (Hp) has emerged as a major swine pathogen. The introduction of Hp, particularly into high-health-status herds, can result in systemic disease of high morbidity and mortality. The increasing importance of Hp has been attributed, in part, to the growth of such herds. Appropriate use of antimicrobials is considered to be an important component of the management of Hp infection. Tilmicosin is a chemically modified macrolide whichhas demonstrated in-vitro activity against field strains of Hp. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of tilmicosin in the control of Hp infection following aerosol challenge with a virulent field strain.
