PRV CHALLENGE OF 22-WEEK OLD PIGS, VACCINATED ONCE AT 10 WEEKS OF AGE (MDA+ve)

PRV (Aujeszky's Disease) vims eradication programmes being carried out in several different countries are in various stages of completion. The breeding herd is vaccinated, and finishers are given doses at 10 and 14 weeks of age. As the success of theprogramme becomes apparent, it may be questioned if a single vaccine dose for pigs at 10 weeks, still carrying Maternally Derived Antibodies (MDA) can confer significant protection for the duration of the finishing period. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the protection conferred by a single MLV PRV vaccination at 10 weeks in MDA+ve pigs, using a challenge model at 22 weeks of age. Two competitor products and a control group were included.
