POWER FOR PEACE: PHOTOVOLTAICS FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN THE LIGHT OF THE G8 TASK FORCE REPORT

Developing countries will be particularly hard hit by the energy and environment problems to come, i.e. the progressive depletion of the world's oil reserves and climate change. They have a vital interest to add clean renewable energies to their portfolio of key instruments for their future development. Currently, this is not the case. PV plays a special role among the renewable energies as it is better suited than any other power source for basic electrification on the smallest possible scale in rural areas. The special Task Force initiated in 2000 by the G8 Summit called rightly for a new and strong initiative to provide ― within 10 years ― 300 million people in rural areas with renewable electricity and service 300 million people in developing nations connected to grids. Following up on this ground-breaking demand, this paper calk on a power for peace pilot programme based on certified standard PV systems to get, within a manageable timeframe, a maximum number of villages on the globe supplied with electricity for community needs.
