Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) fabricated by using low cost mechanical scribing process for patterning the rear passivation layers has shown considerable potential to achieve high efficiency over 20% and significant cost reduction. For the Mechanically Scribed (MS)-PERC with random pyramid at the front surface of the cell and with the contact patterned by the mechanical scriber, an efficiency of 19.42% was achieved on a 0.5 Ωcm, p-type FZ-Si wafer. The passivating layers of the cells were thermally grown oxide. Random pyramids at the surface were formed by sodium carbonate (Na_2CO_3) solutions. For the purpose of achieving high efficiency without any photolithography process, the front surface of the cell with random pyramid was scribed for patterning the metal contact.
