PRRSV ELIMINATION IN A LARGE BREEDING ORGANIZATION

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) emerged in the 1990s as an important disease of swine and, in particular, an important disease for swine breeding stock companies. This report outlines the strategy and results of a PRRSV elimination plan in North America's largest swine breeding organization - PIC. What should we do about PRRS? That was the question faced by PTC's management team in the spring of 1998. Approximately 85% of its production structure (75,000 owned and contracted sows) was PRRSV positive including the top of the pyramids (genetic nucleus and Al boar nucleus herds). Because the virus can be transmitted in semen, genetic dissemination was being compromised.
