DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW SWINE INFLUENZA A VIRUS VACCINE

Influenza A viruses of different subtypes (H1N1, H3N2) are enzootic in densely populated swine regions and are a major cause of acute respiratory disease in all over the world (1). Vaccination is the only practicable strategy to protect pigs from influenza. Commercial, inactivated swine Influenza virus vaccines have been in use for several decades (2). The emergence of the subtype H3N2 in the Americas (3, 4) and the subtype HIN2 in Europe (5, 6) has changed the epidemiology of swine influenza virus dramatically. There has been considerable antigenic drift within the swine influenza virus subtypes (7, 8). Therefore there is a constant need for development of new vaccines that have to be proven to be efficacious against recent virus strains and safe in general. In conclusion we developed a new inactivated swine influenza virus vaccine capable to protect pigs from influenza caused by recent European swine Influenza A virus (FLUAV/sw) isolates.
