STUDY ON CORROSION OF STEELS IN SEAWATER SPLASH ZONE

Corrosion results of 18 types of mild steels and low-alloy steels in seawater splash zone at Qingdao, Xiamen and Yulin sea area of China for 8 years were obtained by using exposure test. Corrosion behavior and rule of steels in splash zone was summarized. Influence of alloying elements on corrosion rate of steels in splash zone was analyzed. Corrosion behavior of mild steels and low-alloy steels in splash zone was alike. Corrosion resistance of 921, 15MnMoVN, 14MnMoNbB and 09CuPTiRe in splash zone excelled mild steels. Steady corrosion rate of mild steel in seawater splash zone at Qingdao, Xiamen and Yulin sea area for long period exposure was respectively 0.22, 0.25 and 0.35 mm·a -1, and the steady penetrate rate of pitting was in between 0.5~0.8 mm. Effect of each alloying element on corrosion rate of steel is identical for splash zone of different sea area. Mn, P, Si, Cr, Mo, Ni and Cu can reduce corrosion of steel in splash zone. S, Al and V are harmful for corrosion of steel in splash zone. Cu-P, Mn-Mo and Ni-Cr-Mo compounding have better effect for reducing corrosion of steel in splash zone.
