Physical contact conditions of glass-ceramic ferrules for optical connectors

Zirconia ferrules are widely used for physical contact connectors. To realize further low cost connectors, glass ceramic ferrules and plastic ferrules have been developed. This paper reports the optimum end face dimensions of glass ceramic ferrule; fiber withdrawal, curvature radius, and convex vertex eccentricity for physical contact connection of SC-type and MU-type optical fiber connectors.
