After a summary and discussion, in the Introduction, of the FCC's granting of approval, with specified limitations, for using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, the activities by Industry Canada, CRC and DRDC in UWB are noted. A brief history of the evolution of UWB technology is also presented in the Introduction, as well as some preliminary description. A more detailed description of UWB technology as applicable to wireless communications is presented in Section 2. The physical and link layers of an UWB communication system are identified and described. Some advantages and shortcomings that may be regarded as challenges to be overcome are described and discussed. Pulse shapes and their design are presented. Modulation schemes are summarized and discussed. The calculation of power spectral density for UWB signals and its properties and shaping are described, including the effects of timing jitter on the spectral density. The design of sequences to shape and flatten the spectral density of UWB signals, to provide time hopping models, for rapid acquisition and for multiple access is reviewed and discussed. Channel models and their measurement and evaluation are described next The effects of multipath on UWB signal reception are described and the advantages of UWB communications using a RAKE receiver in a multipath environment are pointed out Studies of interference of UWB signals by and into other communication systems are discussed. Communication systems, networks and applications using UWB are succinctly reviewed and discussed. Finally, some suggestions for research are noted and set down.
