Possible use of molten chlorides as EC electrolyte has been demonstrated. The assumption that the capacitance of carbon materials in the medium of molten chloride salts is high, and that the operating voltage of EC is determined by the thermodynamic value of decomposition voltage of this electrolyte has been validated. It was demonstrated that potentially feasible values of the specific capacitance, energy and power significantly exceed similar values in capacitors using aqueous and organic electrolyte. Subject to certain technological difficulties related to the necessity of providing high operating temperature and to aggressiveness of melts towards structural materials, the data obtained may be of interest for development of EC.
