The effect of local site conditions on the characteristics of the expected ground shaking, is usually incorporated into building codes by specifying several site categories and assigning a site/soil coefficient for each category. In UBC97, site categories and site coefficients were revised, based on the results of extended research studies and recordings of 1989 Loma Prieta and 1994 Northridge, earthquakes. In this paper, a probabilistic approach is used, in order to establish statistics of site coefficients for C and D site categories, according to UBC97 using series of recorded and synthetic ground motions, expected to occur in Greece and 1D equivalent linear analysis of well-documented soil profiles. Site coefficients obtained from this study, are compared to those specified in the 1997 NEHRP provisions, EC8 and Greek Seismic Code (EAK2000).
