METHODOLOGY TO ASSESS SANDWICH PANEL BUILDING SYSTEM IN FIRE

This paper will consider a methodology to assess the fire behaviour and fire hazard of load bearing composite panels for use in domestic and commercial buildings and which is based on fire testing in three-scales used in combination to model the fire damage and its effect on both fire and structural performance. The fire testing is subdivided into bench, intermediate and full-scale. The methodology will link the results of the fire test to determine critical failure and behaviour patterns within the building system covering different end-use conditions and relevant fire scenarios. The intermediate scale regime combines with bench-scale tests to provide material properties so that progressive fire damage in the sandwich panel can be modelled and fire resistance and structural performance can be predicted. The model will be calibrated against full-scale test performance but its main objective is to reduce the need for full-scale tests and to better predict the real behaviour of panels in a room fire.
