There is an increasing demand in which nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) technologies are needed but to this stage not many has been fully developed and used commercially. However this is not strange in the timber, wood and wood products industry as it may have the least number of commercialized technologies. A brief review of currently available nondestructive evaluation methods for timber is given in this paper to examine their principles, applications, advantages and limitations. These NDT&E methods include visual inspection, ultrasound, stress wave, infrared thermography, x-ray, microwaves and radar which used to measure moisture content, density, thickness, elastic modulus and to locate delaminations, defects, grain directions, and decay. In addition, Future directions and needs of NDT for timber, wood and wood products are presented.
