The purposes of the fire-resistant design for steel structures are stated in this paper. The disadvantages of the conventional fire-resistant design approach for steel structures are discussed. As an advanced and promising approach, the performance-based approach is proposed for fire-resistant design of steel structures. The key points of the new approach are presented and the advantages of the approach in insuring the fire safety of occupants and minimizing the cost relevant to the performance of the structures caused by fire are pointed out.
