Dynamic interaction between electrical substation equipment connected by a rigid bus may strongly amplify the equipment response relative to its stand-alone response. In practice, a flexible strap connector (FSC) is used to reduce this effect. A new mathematical model is developed to describe the asymmetric hysteretic behavior of the FSC. The model is highly flexible, allowing good fit to hysteretic loops obtained from experiments or finite element analysis. Furthermore, the model is convenient for random vibration analysis by use of the equivalent linearization method. This method is used to investigate the effect of interaction between connected equipment items. A new design of FSC is presented, which is highly effective in reducing the adverse interaction effect.
