The principle of metal hydride based hydrogen compressor is extended to a water pumping system. Five AB{sub}5 type hydrogen absorbing alloys namely LaNi{sub}4.9Ge{sub}0.1, MmNi{sub}4Al, LaNi{sub}4.8Sn{sub}0.2, MmNi{sub}4.2Al{sub}0.8 and La{sub}0.8Ce{sub}0.2Ni{sub}4.25C{sub}0.5Sn{sub}0.25 are compared in terms of specific water pumping capacity, heat source temperature and efficiency for various heads. The pump also delivers nearly one-fifth of the pumped water as hot water. Operating on heat energy, these pumps are suitable for high pump heads in the range of 30 m especially where conventional power source is not available. Among the selected alloys MmNi{sub}4Al shows better performance in terms of discharge and as well as efficiency.
