Over the past 30 years electric propulsion has been frequently selected as the propulsion system of choice for various types of warship and auxiliary ship in several different nations' navies. Throughout this period, the authors have been involved with Royal Navy electrical power and propulsion systems as operators, maintainers, trainers, designers, procurers and testers. This paper will present the authors view of the advances achieved over this period, identify the drivers causing the changes and make suggestions about how future systems may develop.
