As a global citizen believing in sharing the public responsibility of protecting the environment, the Naval Logistics Department of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has been formulating environmentally sound policies and implementing a series of green ship initiatives under the Smart Action In Logistics (SAIL) program. Furthermore, an environmental protection program based on the ISO14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) has been initiated since 2001. These continual efforts have put in place a structured framework to improve the environmental performance of RSN. The congruent management model that blends EMS and SAIL has yielded significant achievements in protecting the marine environment. Some of the recent notable green ship implementations are the tin free antifouling paint conversion, stern flap system for fuel reduction and low solar absorption coating for reduced heat load. With the success of this EMS-SAIL management model, more green ship initiatives such as microbubble drag reduction and integrated fuel cell system have been lined up to continue our efforts to go green.
