This paper presents an ongoing work on a vision based portable mobility aid for visually impaired and blind people. The aim of the research is to analyse the scene dynamically and to identify objects from the moving image sequences. The paper discusses a shape based matching algorithm for object detection in moving image sequences. Obstacle detection is achieved through matching the moving image sequences with a predefined image object database. The paper describes the methods and algorithms applied in this research. Initial results show satisfactory success in recognising predefined objects from moving image sequences. The outcome is promising and the results prove that it can be the basis to develop a prototype vision based mobility aid for the blind and visually impaired people.
