Over the years the operating temperature of gas radiant heaters was raised leading to increased efficiencies, but a maximum temperature of 1100°C for continuous operation could not be exceeded. The utilization of porous media combustion in the case of infrared gas heaters is a promising solution, in order to realize infrared heaters with a radiating surface at higher temperatures up to 1450°C. In this paper an overview of the principles and the experimental and numerical development work towards the application of the porous media burner technology in gas infrared heaters is given. With the infrared porous media burner developed in this way, higher temperatures and a higher radiant efficiency can be achieved than with conventional infrared gas burners. Thus, processes like drying, coating, preheating etc. can be realized in a more efficient and economical way.
