Distributed internet services have gained popularity and interest in the research and industrial community. These services typically go through a setup phase, involving exchange of control parameters. There is a need to define a scalable and flexible security architecture to protect these control parameters. We present our experiences with addressing the problem of securing control parameters for distributed multimedia services in two areas. First, we describe RSVP-SQoS [5] which is a scalable and flexible architecture for securing RSVP control messages. Second, we describe the deployment of SAMURAI [6], a flexible and scalable architecture that supports user identification and user mobility in pervasive environments, for a video on demand service. SAMURAI provides different quality of protection levels for the user identification and user mobility control parameters. Providing different quality of protection levels enables us to tradeoff security for performance and also to reduce the overhead of the security architecture.
