Voice activity detection (VAD) is used in a variety of speech communication systems such as speech coding, speech recognition, hands-free telephony, audio-conferencing, and noise reduction. In this paper, we present a comparative study of the performance of different VAD algorithms under various acoustical background noise conditions. We study effects of additive noise over speech detection and present an improved cepstral-based VAD that shows better robustness to noise conditions.
