In this study, we present analysis of the Fourier harmonics from decomposing the directional spectra derived from three-dimensional ocean surface wave topography by an airborne scanning lidar system. The similarity properties of the wavenumber dependence of Fourier coefficients are analyzed. A nonlinear function is proposed to represent the similarity relation. A bimodal directional distribution model in the form of Fourier series expansion consisting of the first eight Fourier harmonics is developed. Application of this model to directional buoy measurements is demonstrated.
