The results of estimating the directional wave fields in front of a detached breakwater were compared here in this paper. Two of the non-phase-locked methods, i.e., the Maximum Likelihood Method (MLM), and the Extended Maximum Entropy Method (EMEP), were adopted for the purpose. Although the latter outperforms the former in estimating directional spectra, the improvements for estimating the reflection coefficients just in front of the reflector are only marginal. It is shown that the reflection coefficients decrease with the increasing distance away from the detached breakwater. The more spread is the directional distribution of the wave field, the more energy will diffract into the lee of the detached breakwater.
