The wave growth limit in shallow water is studied by analyzing a) field data from two Dutch lakes, b) the wave growth curves according to Bretschneider and Young and Verhagen and c) the results of the numerical model SWAN. The uncertainty about the achievable wave height to water depth ratio appears to be considerable. SWAN tends to underestimate the wave growth limit and a strategy for further model improvement is pointed out.
