Methodical approaches for investigating the role of subsurface environments in the global N_2O budget

The implication of subsurface environments for N_2O emission to the atmosphere is poorly understood because the interaction of the relevant partial processes is complex and difficult to measure. In this paper, the existing methods to study concentration, production and consumption of N_2O in the ground water and its transport to the atmosphere are summarized and discussed.
