This paper is concerned with the productivity calculation and the choice well patterns of mixed horizontal and vertical wells. Because horizontal wells naturally drain oval rather than circular areas, the wells should be placed within rectangular drainage well patterns. Using pseudo 3-dimensional method and conformal transformation, the potential function of a row horizontal wells is deduced. This function is important for horizontal well pattern research. Using this function and superposition principle method, an analytical solution of production for the rectangular mixed well pattern is given. Quantitative means for defining the shapes of the optimum pattern are developed in this paper by entering two dimensionless parameters of shape factor and dimensionless length of horizontal well. The production formula is used to optimize the mixed well patterns. The curves of the optimized shape factor against dimensionless length of horizontal well are drawn. The results show that the pattern area and formation thickness have no effect on the relationship, which can be applied into development program design.
