Alkali alumino silicate and Soda-lime type glasses can be strengthened via ion-exchange. Compared to soda-lime glasses, alkali aluminosilicates can achieve higher compressive stresses and deeper compressive layers which results in superior strength. High damage resistance and strength are required in glass for applications such as consumer electronics which are exposed to potentially damaging stresses and impacts in everyday use. The effect of time, temperature, and ion-exchange bath chemistry on the chemical strengthening of alkali aluminosilicate glasses and soda-lime type glasses will be discussed.
