The early utilization of advanced composites, for structural aerospace applications, was driven largely by the need for military superiority. The necessity for the maximization of mechanical performance has for the most part been displaced by a desire to produce composite structures by cost effective manufacturing methodologies. Accordingly, recent product development activities have been more concerned with the costs relating to fabrication (processability, tooling, etc) and assembly. A new generation of prepreg products, designed specifically to address manufacturing issues such as porosity, core crush, dimensional tolerance and out of autoclave curing, have been developed and will be discussed.
