The objective of this research was to develop a first generation computational tool that could be used to study moisture absorption rates and subsequent hydrolysis of coupling agents used in conjunction with phenylethynyl terminated imide (PETI) high temperature adhesives. Moisture absorption rates at the titanium-to-adhesive interface and subsequent hydrolysis (leading to failure) of adhesive coupling agents was the focus of this synergistic research that integrates computational modeling of adhesives with synthetic preparation of coupling agents and adhesives. The general use of computational approaches with adhesives is a developing area of research and there are currently no computational models that aid in the study of PETI adhesives. A series of coupling agents containing phenylethynyl pendant groups and end-capped with silane functional groups were prepared. Ti-6A1-4V alloy coupons were surface treated using Pasa-Jell? 107M and AC~?-130 Sol-Gel. Single lap shear specimens, bonded using PETI-5 adhesive and the various coupling agents, were tested according to ASTM D1002-05. The effect of coupling agent variation on apparent shear strength values determined at room temperature and after a 72-hour water boil will be presented. Mechanical data and preliminary computer modeling of the adhesives will be discussed.
