Advanced composites (Fiber reinforced polymers -FRP) can significantly lower the creep and shrinkage of concrete columns. This issue has considerable implications for columns in high-rise buildings. The effects of FRP include the following: (a) confinement of concrete and resisting its lateral expansion, (b) sealing of concrete and retaining its moisture, and (c) allowing stress relaxation of concrete core by taking on a larger share of axial load as concrete core creeps. In fiber-wrapped concrete columns, only the first effect is present. On the other hand, concrete-filled FRP tubes benefit from all three effects. The paper discusses creep and shrinkage experiments as well as comparisons to the existing creep prediction models for exposed concrete.
