An overview is presented of what to look for when conducting troubleshooting of fiber optic cable assembly performance problems. When you have a component or system problem, you need to be able to assess what it is that causes an undue loss or some other problem that is discerned in your fiber optic system. This applies whether it is in the manufacture or in the application usage of a fiber optic cable assembly. A review is given herein of qualitative test and troubleshooting tools, of quantitative measurements of optical power/ attenuation, and problem fault location in a system. Some background is covered regarding the specifics of cleaning and testing, including standardization considerations, consistency in evaluation testing and what is of major importance in the evaluation process. The goal is to provide useful guidelines for determining where and what is the nature of a problem in your fiber optic data transmission system.
