The World Wide Web contains literally billions of interconnection points. The major portion of the network is based on twisted pair cabling with associated hardware and modular connectors. Differential is a prevailing transmission mode. The differential transmission requires the common mode noise suppression. The paper describes novel modular connectors with full differential filters for 10baseT, 100baseT and Gigabit Internet protocols. A true three-dimensional packaging technology is demonstrated for common mode chokes and high frequency transformers, where resistive arrays can be included to reduce reflections. Improved reliability is achieved by separating internal connections from the PWB attach area. A high temperature attachment method is used to form internal connection between insulated magnetic wires. A complete circuit for a full 2-port differential is less than 1000 cubic mm including 3kV capacitor. The results of mechanical and environmental testing are shown. The electrical characterization included NEXT, Return Loss, Common Mode Rejection. This development allows introduction of required common mode suppression and signal conditioning without affecting the connector interface and impacting PWB outline and can provide significant improvement in density of the networking equipment.
