Epoxy resins have long been a favored material used to formulate high performance maintenance coatings. As the demand for severe chemical resistance in coatings has increased, multifunctional novolac epoxy resins have been used to replace traditional difunctional epoxies. The use of multi-functional novolac epoxy resins increases the crosslink density of the cured composition such that chemical resistance to aggressive species is greatly improved. In addition, they bring higher glass transition temperature (T_g) to cured systems, which provides improved retention of strength, rigidity and other properties at elevated temperatures. This paper will examine the relative differences of various types of novolac epoxies when diluted to equivalent viscosity's. In addition, the performance properties of two model coatings formulations will be reviewed.
