Polymers made using a specific continuous polymerization process result in improved color, the ability to produce low molecular weights with narrow molecular weight distribution and excellent batch-to-batch consistency in comparison with those attainable by conventional solution polymerization process. These polymers are particularly useful for two-component coatings for industrial and automotive applications with polyisocyanate crosslinkers. Statistically designed experiments were used to correlate composition and molecular weight with end-use. An example of this methodology for development of polyols for coatings with target performance is presented. Physical characterization of the polyols and free films of coatings based on these polyols by DSC and DMA has provided useful information on structure-property relationships. These results are interpreted based on the attributes of the polymerization process.
