The pleasures and perils of sharing information: A pilot case study of a male South African bricklayer

Motivation to share information has been understood using attitudes or by searching out general factors but this fails to discriminate between similar actors with different profiles for sharing information. A pilot case study examines the information sharing of a South African bricklayer. Three targets for information sharing are discussed: the owner, the labourer and the other trades. These targets are identified using stakeholder theory modified by identity theory. Differences are found between propensity to share information. The pilot has limitations nonetheless the description resulting from participant observation has sufficient detail to warrant further studies to enable triangulation on what are regarded as the pleasures and perils of sharing information.
