Cyclosulfamuron is a novel sulfamoylurea rice herbicide which has been commercialsed commercialized in Korea by BASF AG in a number of different co-formulation types. A new granular (GR) co-formulation of cyclosulfamuron and pendimethalin has recently been developed to control annual and perennial paddy weeds. The GR formulation has been widely tested in greenhouse and rice paddy field evaluations in South Korea. This formulation has optimized release characteristics allowing for slower release of the active ingredients in the initial phase after application, ensuring good crop safety without compromising weed control performance. Rapid adsorption of the active ingredients into the paddy soil was confirmed by field and laboratory tests simulating normal, water over-flow and drought paddy conditions. Application timings from 0 days after transplanting (DAT) up to 7 DAT at application rates of 20~30kg product/ha provided excellent weed control (>90%), and crop safety across all the major Korean rice cultivars under all rice transplanting practices tested. The cyclosulfamuron plus pendimethalin ready-to-use GR co-formulation has the potential to reduce labor cost and improve rice farmer economics through ease of application and one-shot, season long weed control.
